Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (molecular formula MgSO₄ 7H₂O), also known as sulfurous acid, bitter salt, cathartic salt, and cathartic salt, occurs as white or colorless needle-shaped or oblique columnar crystals. It is odorless and has a slightly bitter, cool taste. Its molecular weight is 246.47 and its specific gravity is 1.68. It is freely soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerin, and soluble in its own water of crystallization at 67°C (according to the Chemical Handbook). Upon heating, it contains no more than four molecules of water of crystallization at 70°C and 80°C. At 200°C, all water of crystallization is lost, rendering it anhydrous. It readily dries to a powder in air. Upon heating, it gradually loses its water of crystallization, becoming anhydrous magnesium sulfate. This product contains no toxic impurities.

Because magnesium sulfate heptahydrate is less soluble, it is easier to weigh than anhydrous magnesium sulfate, making it easier to control quantitative quantities in industry. It is primarily used in the manufacture of fertilizers, leather, printing and dyeing, catalysts, papermaking, plastic chemicals, books, porcelain, pigments, matches, explosives, and fireproofing materials. It can be used for printing and dyeing thin cotton and silk, as a weighting agent for cotton yarn, and as a filler for kapok products. It is also used medicinally as epsom salt.
Application:
(1) As a base fertilizer, magnesium sulfate can be used as a direct fermentation agent or as a component of compound fertilizer.
(2) As a selected fertilizer, magnesium sulfate can be used in ditches or dissolved in water once it reaches sufficient standards.
(3) Magnesium sulfate can be used as a foliar fertilizer during the initial and mid-growth periods.
(4) Different crops have different requirements for spray concentrations, and the same crop has different requirements at different growth stages. For example, fruit trees should have a spray concentration of 0.5-1.0%; vegetables should have a spray concentration of 0.2-0.5%; and crops should have a spray concentration of 0.3-0.8%.
