Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, commonly known as green vitriol, is a chemical substance consisting of ferrous sulfate crystals in the form of irregular, massive, columnar, or granular aggregates. It has a bluish-green color, green with white streaks.
Chemical formula: FeSO₄·7H₂O, pH 3, melting point 64°C, and is soluble in water and glycerin upon thermal decomposition.
Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate is a byproduct of the sulfuric acid process in the production of rare metal products. It appears as a light green or yellowish-green crystalline solid. Adding a prescribed amount to alkaline water can adjust the pH of the water, organically bind to suspended solids in the water, and accelerate sedimentation.

Applications:
1. Soil Improvement, Fertilizer
Agricultural-grade ferrous sulfate is used to adjust soil pH. It can reduce soil alkalinity and can be added to plants. It can also be used as a fertilizer and as a catalyst for the production of green pigments in plants, playing an important role in plant absorption.
2. Water Treatment
Ferrous sulfate has been used in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants for flocculation, water purification, and phosphorus removal to prevent eutrophication of surface waters.
3. Colorant
Ferrous sulfate is used as a raw material for inks, most notably iron gall ink. It is also used as a mordant for wool dyeing.
